Virta and SNCF have formed a strategic partnership to accelerate the green transition of the French national railway company’s vehicle fleet.

SNCF is accelerating the shift to electric vehicles, launching an ambitious initiative to install 5,000 charging points at all locations in France. To enable this transformation, SNCF has selected Virta, a Finnish EV charging solutions provider, and Eiffage Energie Systèmes for infrastructure installation and maintenance.

A nationwide project

This three-way partnership aims to progressively equip SNCF's different sites with charging infrastructure. This supports the electrification of its service and company vehicle fleet. SNCF, through SNCF Immobilier, has entrusted Virta with managing the infrastructure for a period of at least six years.

"We designed a tailor-made solution with Eiffage Énergie Systèmes to offer a turnkey package including design, configuration, supply, installation, operation and maintenance of the charge points as well as management and support for end-customers," explains Brendan Shepard, Sales Team Lead at Virta.

Results already visible

Currently, 105 charging points operate in SNCF administrative buildings and technical centres across France, with 34 more charging points being installed. Most chargers are Alfen Double models, tailored to the operator's requirements.

The project also involves migrating legacy infrastructure, such as 20 Schneider chargers previously installed in Saint-Denis, highlighting the adaptability of the Virta solution to diverse setups.

A solution tailored to the needs of fleets and motorists

SNCF Immobilier has chosen a Virta Launch contract with the Fleet solution, enabling efficient management of private charging at its depots. Service vehicle drivers enjoy complimentary charging exclusively at SNCF-provided charge points.

During this project, SNCF opened charging sites in north-west France and in the Paris region, where SNCF employees can charge their personal vehicles at a discounted rate. Drivers can use the Virta mobile application or a dedicated charging tag to easily access the service.

A response to regulatory requirements

This initiative aligns with the 2019 Loi d'orientation des mobilités (LOM), which aims to accelerate the deployment of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The new law requires companies with fleets of over 100 vehicles to gradually renew them, so they reach 50% low-emission vehicles by 2030.

This partnership between SNCF, Eiffage Energie Systèmes and Virta perfectly illustrates how a Nordic scale-up can work effectively with leading French companies to deliver relevant tools for electric fleet management.
